Crimes Against Humanity

Report by OHCHR | October 2024

On the 10th of October, 2024, the United Nations Commission of Inquiry has accused Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during its military operations in Gaza. According to the commission's findings, Israel's deliberate attacks on healthcare facilities and medical personnel in Gaza, as well as the destruction of the healthcare system, constitute war crimes and the crime against humanity of extermination. The report highlights the devastating impact on civilians, particularly children, who have been disproportionately affected by the collapse of medical services.

The commission, led by former UN human rights chief Navi Pillay, cites numerous attacks on hospitals, medical staff, and ambulances, with hundreds of civilians, including children, killed or injured. Israel has justified some actions as targeting Hamas' use of medical facilities for military purposes, though the commission noted a lack of evidence to support these claims. Additionally, the report documents the mistreatment of Palestinian detainees, including torture and abuse, while also condemning Hamas for war crimes against Israeli hostages.
